Finally, I started reading the diary

Standard

6th June 2015,

Today, I returned home from work to only find Tim trying to have his way with something. I approached him and saw that something was the weird diary we fished out the other day. I had completely forgotten about it because of a sudden increase in workload at the office.

The diary, firmly placed between Tim’s teeth resisted his attempts with all its might. I remember to have kept the diary on my reading table on the day I found it and since then, I had completely forgotten about its existence or discovery. Apparently , today Tim was on another of his house exploration missions. He does that everytime he feels bored.

I tried to pry the diary away from his strong jaws, worried that I might lose important information stored in the diary and also I was not inclined to allow any kind of contaminant inside my kid’s stomach.

I could finally pull away the diary from his mouth. His drool was all over the diary and now on my hands. I rushed to the bathroom to clean up the diary and my hands. While cleaning the diary, something odd struck me, there was not a single dent, not even an invisible scratch. I looked at it closely and searched for damages thoroughly. To my utter dismay, I could not find even a single mark of assault. As if the diary had never seen the insides of Tim’s mouth. Rather, it seemed to have been specifically engineered to withstand any kind of damage.

How else would one explain the absence of any kind of effect from mineral rich lake water. At least the pages of the diary should have been dripping wet. It survived hours of attack from a German Shepherd who can crumble small bones like potato chips. I was definitely astounded. Such material was unheard of.

I decided to read the diary after our dinner. Tim would be fast asleep as soon as his belly gets full.

After a regular dinner of sauteed veggies and chicken, I wrestled for a while with Tim, I sat down with the diary. I could hear Tim playing with his squeaky toy in his bed as I opened the diary. I opened the first page and the date of entry hit me in the chest. I tried to calm my mind. I tried to listen to the sea waves crashing on the beach with the occasional shrill from one of the many birds nesting in the trees.

The entry said 5th May 2355, that date wasn’t even in the past. It was almost 340 years into the future!!! I would have dismissed it as a joke if it hadn’t been for the intriguing material this diary was made of. I decided to go ahead which resulted in more shocks of higher intensities. I could barely contain myself when I was finished with the first entry. I couldn’t even find an adjective for the feelings that swirled inside me. I turned my head to see the time, it was almost 2AM, way past my bedtime.

I couldn’t help myself from waking Tim up, mainly because he was the only one with whom I could talk to at that hour. He was of course irritated with the unwanted break in his sleep, but he is a good boy and he listened patiently to my incoherent babbling with some whines and groans to seem attentive. I knew he wanted to go back to his dreamworld.

Finally, unable to arrive at a rational understanding, I decided to just write down the entries with the dates, verbatim, in my blog.

It all started with a walk on the beach

Standard

3rd June 2015,

It was a day just like any other in the summertime. Everything relevant to my life was going on at its usual pace. I had a peaceful job, a nice house by the beach in the city outskirts and no unwanted hassles. My personal life was completed by Tim, a German Shepherd who was my all-time friend. I was woken up by Tim’s relentless sniffing my face. I saw the clock, it was late in the morning. I didn’t worry about it as it was my day off. I got off my bed, gave Tim some dry food to calm him down and myself had some lightly toasted bread and omelettes with my favourite cup of black coffee while the morning news ran in the background.

Luckily, today was relatively cooler than other days, and hence a perfect day for an outing. I planned to take Tim, my German Shepherd out to the beach. He had been inside the house too long because of the heatwave. He needed some change of air too. I love taking care of him since he is all that is left of my family. I lost my parents at a young age and currently I was not looking for a relationship.

So, I decided to pack us a big lunch and went to the sea which was about a ten minute walk from my home. The beach was relatively empty, today being a weekday which promised us a peaceful environment.

We started playing catch, though with a camel bone. Everything was going fine until I threw the bone a bit too hard and it went deep inside the woods that grew on the other end of the beach. Tim was a bit scared of the thick growth of trees, he definitely wouldn’t have gone alone. He looked at me and barked, I knew I had to lead the way. I went into the woods and Tim followed me.

We were searching for the bone and while doing so reached a small clearing with a pond, the clarity of water was surprising. I peeked inside the pond to look for the bone. Instead of my friend’s plaything, I found something unusual, a leather bound diary. I fished the diary out, its cover was not leather but something similar with a shiny coating. The diary was like diaries from every aspect except one, the diary was not wet and I had just taken it out of water. It was quite large and I was very intrigued. I decided to take it home and read it. I was engrossed in my thoughts revolving around my recent acquisition, a sudden bark brought me back to the real world. I turned my head to and couldn’t see Tim anywhere but I knew it was his barking. Then, I heard some rustling among the leaves and Tim jumped out of a shrubbery, with a large grin and the bone in his mouth. I smiled at him and said, “Let’s go, it’s been a long day.” He followed me while wagging his tail.
